Law & You

Overview

Project Law & You (L&Y) is committed to empowering and improving the lives of migrant domestic workers (MDWs) in Singapore. Our volunteers are involved in organising and conducting legal awareness workshops for MDWs on topics such as well being, criminal matters, and employment rights. Some of our volunteers will also be assisting lawyers from Law Society Pro Bono Services at legal clinics for MDWs. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) is also working on a research collaboration with L&Y, where some of our volunteers will help with conducting focus group discussions and surveys, culminating in a final presentation to MOM.

Reflections from Members

“I participated in the legal awareness workshops with the Foreign Domestic Worker Association for Social Support and Training (FAST). There were various topics that we had to do research and present on. It was really heartwarming to see the beneficiaries being engaged and even asking us questions about some issues that they or their friends faced. Especially towards the end, when COVID regulations loosened and we could resume physical workshops & activities, it really made me feel like I was making an impact on the lives of the beneficiaries.”

“Signing up for the collaboration with the Ministry of Manpower (MoM) was a really enriching experience. The team and I conducted research about moonlighting over a few months, via surveys and focus group discussion with different groups of migrant domestic workers. At the end of the collaboration, we had the privilege of presenting our findings to a team from MOM. Especially as a Y1 student, I’m really grateful to the seniors who guided me along the way with the legal research and our final presentation! The experience has really opened my eyes more to the realities of what migrant domestic workers face in Singapore, and how we can hopefully help them during their employment here!”
